Bruges, Belgium

It's hard to avoid history among Bruges' cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Head the the Markt, or Market Square, to find the Belfry of Bruges, a medieval bell tower. Head inside and climb its 366 steps to experience some incredible views of the city. The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a Roman Catholic cathedral that holds a very rare relic, a piece of cloth believed to be stained with the blood of Jesus Christ. Hundreds of people visit the cathedral just to get a glimpse of it.

Athens, Greece

Athens has been a much loved destination of choice for tourists for many years, and with its abundance of ancient ruins, it's easy to see why. The most famous of its ancient sites is the Acropolis, a hilltop temple that dates back to the 5th century. Head to the Plaka to see even more acropolises, temples and tavernas. There are also numerous museums such as the National Archaeological Museum, to help guide you through if you are not too clued up on ancient history.

Kyoto, Japan

In Kyoto, you can explore a world of temples and a castle that dates back to the 10th and the 12th centuries. By taking a stroll down the streets of the town, it's hard not to notice the history of the city that is shown in many different places. In the forests there are magnificent, hidden temples such as the Kiyomizu-dera. This Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a visit to the castle of Nijo and walk along its nightingale floor: wooden planks designed to make a chirping sound when walked upon.

Bangkok, Sukothai and Chiang Mai, Thailand

Embark on a discovery of Thailand's famous temples. Bangkok, Sukhothai and of course Chiang Mai are where you can find a plethora of ornate Buddhist temples. You will be left in awe of their incredible architecture, and the buildings are of all different colors. The Buddha statues also vary and are equally as incredible as the buildings. The oldest temple in Thailand is the Wat Pho, which was completed during the 16th century.

Dehli, Jaipur and Agra, India

Embark upon a journey into the universe of the Indian Maharajas, the Great Kings. Visit what's known as the triangle of gold: the cities of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. Admire the stunning palaces whilst taking in the modern sights and sounds everywhere you turn. The Hawa Mahal, known also as the palace of winds, has an impressive 953 windows said to be designed so that the ladies of the royal court could observe the events that unfolded in the streets behind the intricate latticework of the windows. A trip to India wouldn't be complete without visiting the Taj Mahal, arguably one of the world's most admired landmarks of heritage.

Zacatecas, Mexico

At the doorstep of the desert, Zacatecas offers landscapes that are dry and semi-arid. Here you can visit the beautiful silver cities, the ghost town of Real de Catorce and the vestiges of the Chichimec civilization of La Quemada. Zacatecas is simply stunning with its blue sky and contrasting red earth.

Petra, Jordan

Take off for an adventure to Petra and see the wonders of the Jordanian desert. Here you'll find a number of buildings dating back to the Byzantine period that are decorated with mosaics. Petra dates back as early as 300 BC and this archaeological site has taken influence from the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. For even more culture, visit the towns of Amman and Madaba to see even more monasteries and tombs.

Oslo, Norway

In Oslo, the capital of Norway, you can learn about history of the Vikings. Head to the Vikinglandet, located just outside the city, which is a park dedicated to the country's Viking heritage. The Viking Ship Museum also offers a real taste of Viking history, displaying ships which date from 800 to 1000 AD. The Akershus Fortress and Frogner Park, with museum and sculptures, are also two places that hold important historical significance in Oslo.

Normandy, France

Normandy is home to one of Europe's most unforgettable sights: Mont-Saint-Michel. This landmark is found on an island where Normandy and Brittany meet. The island is well known for its outstanding Romanesque-Gothic buildings. After the French Revolution in the 19th century, Mont-Saint-Michel was used as a prison.

Rome, Italy

A trip to the Eternal city won't leave anyone disappointed. Many great Roman rulers have made their mark on Rome from Julius Caesar to Augustus. The Colosseum is a must-see for every visitor as it is a truly outstanding amphitheater built in the 1st century AD. The Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill should also be on your radar.

Budapest, Hungary

This picturesque city in Hungary is full of history waiting to be explored. In Budapest's old town you can find the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Danube embankments and the Buda Castle district. If you are unsure about where to explore, start your journey off at Heroes' Square, where you can find the Millennium Monument or Andrassy Avenue, which has examples of neo-Renaissance architecture.

Prague, Czech Republic

For cultural holidays, Prague has always been a top destination. It's a city full of different architectural styles, from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and Art Nouveau. The most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture are the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Church of our Lady of the Snows. The Schwarzenberg Palace is also worth seeing given that it has been titled the Pearl of Renaissance architecture.

England, United Kingdom

Gardening is a great part of English culture and is a well-loved tradition that has been preserved for many years. During the spring and summer months, you can browse some of England's most prestigious gardens, which are filled with great scents and colors. The Most Beautiful Train Rides in the World

February 2019

The old adage says that beauty is in the journey, not necessarily the destination — but sometimes beauty can be found in both places, especially if your mode of travel provides you with the opportunity to sightsee.

Traveling the globe by rail has always been one of the easiest and most romantic ways to indulge in wanderlust.

International Tour Package From Mumbai

Look at some beautiful train rides so that you know which excursions are worth making a reality.

Bernina Express

Start: Chur, Switzerland
End: Tirano, Italy
Ticket Price: First-class tickets start at $64.
You can take the journey of a lifetime on this train that climbs as high as 7,392 feet above sea level into the Alps before descending into the Italian city of Tirano. Featuring 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and curvy viaducts, the train route itself has been named to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the scenery isn’t bad either. In addition to mountains and glaciers, passengers will see orchards, vineyards, forests and even a Swiss castle or two in the picturesque Domleschg Valley.

Additionally, passengers can pre-order platters of sausage, cheese and other alpine-appropriate snacks and drinks, or indulge in food and beverages from the train’s roving minibar.

Blue Train

Start: Pretoria, South Africa
End: Cape Town, South Africa
Ticket Price: Ticket prices for a single adult in a deluxe suite start at $2,066.

Passengers travel almost the entire length of South Africa on this 27-hour, 994-mile journey, taking in mountains and fertile farmland along the way. But the historic highlights of the trip are probably its off-train excursions.

The Pretoria to Cape Town route includes a stop in Kimberley, which transports travelers to the height of the diamond rush days. The train also stops at Matjiesfontein, which retains Victorian charm thanks to its Colonial-era architecture and original, 19th-century London lampposts.

Fares include all meals, high tea, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, plus an after-dinner Cuban cigar and off-train excursions. The Blue Train site notes that rates, however, don’t include French Champagne, caviar and external telephone calls and that passengers are expected to dress for dinner.

California Zephyr

Start: Chicago
End: San Francisco (Emeryville, Calif., station)
Ticket Price: A Value Fare for a reserved coach seat starts at $172, depending on the time of year. Value Fares are fully refundable if travel is canceled at least 48 hours before departure.

Want to take a cross-country road trip in the U.S.? Travelers take in the sights between two iconic American cities on this picturesque route. The varied vistas on this 51-hour train ride between Chicago and San Francisco include the Rocky Mountains, the snow-festooned Sierra Nevadas, Donner Lake and some of Colorado’s most beautiful canyons.

Space in a sleeper car will set train travelers back significantly more than a standard coach fare. Those who choose to snooze in their seats can stretch their legs by taking a trip to the dining car, where dinner entrees start at around $16.

Chepe

Start: Chihuahua, Mexico
End: Los Mochis, Mexico
Ticket Price: Fares are $174 for First Express tickets and $100.49 for economy class.

This train travels past fields tended by Mennonites, who moved from Canada to Mexico in the 1920s. Additionally, travelers will see Copper Canyon, a network of gorges that cuts across the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, passing high plains and waterfalls on the way to the Pacific coast.

The First Express trains offer a dining car and bar, and economy service features a snack car. Travelers can enjoy snacks a la carte. Many train travelers take time to sample local cuisine at stops and enjoy excursions along the route before re-boarding the train at a later date.

Eastern & Oriental Express

Start: Bangkok
End: Singapore
Ticket Price: Fares start at $5,200 per passenger.

The Eastern & Oriental Express also runs between Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, but the Bangkok to Singapore route gives passengers an extra day of onboard luxury. Fares might seem steep, but a steward brings breakfast to your cabin each day, and sleeping quarters offer amenities like an ensuite bathroom.

Lunch in the dining car might be roast duck breast, while dinner could showcase saba mackerel followed by a main course of beef medallions. At the end of the day, enjoy a nightcap in the train’s open-sided observation car.

Whether train travelers are in the open-air car or seated before one of the expansive windows, they’ll take in sights that include temples and tea plantations. Stops include iconic sites such as the River Kwai Bridge and the gold-domed Ubudiah Mosque, crafted with imported Italian marble over a century ago.

The Ghan Expedition

Start: Adelaide, Australia
End: Darwin, Australia
Ticket Price: Tickets vary based on service, season and cabin selection. Gold Service single-fare, single-cabin tickets for the high season (May 2018 through August 2018) cost about $2,068.

The Ghan transports travelers from Adelaide, Australia’s cosmopolitan capital on the southern coast, to the Northern Territory. On the way, you’ll pass mountain ranges, mallee scrub and ochre-tinted outback.

Off-train excursions include a stargazing stop in the outback and an off-train excursion in Katherine, where passengers can take a cruise on the Katherine River or spend the day with aboriginal people, learning about the culture and trying their hand at traditional crafts.

Along with other perks, the Ghan’s Gold Service fare features a private cabin, all-inclusive dining, beverages — including Australian wines, beers, base spirits and nonalcoholic drinks — and excursions at key stops. Gold Service single cabins offer shared bathroom facilities, while twin cabins have upper and lower berths and a private ensuite bath.

Harz Mountains

Start: St Pancras International Station, London
End: St Pancras International Station, London
Ticket Price: A six-day, round-trip package from Rail Discoveries starts at $1,181 per person for the April 15, 2018, departure.

The Rail Discoveries package includes a guided walking tour of the historic German city of Goslar, where passengers have time to explore on their own. The itinerary features a stop in Quedlinburg, which boasts hundreds of distinctive, half-timbered buildings and other architecture dating back centuries.

Among the many benefits of this journey is the opportunity to travel on nostalgic, steam-hauled trains over narrow-gauge railways through the Harz Mountains. The package price includes five dinners, five nights of hotel accommodations and breakfast each day.

Reunification Express

Start: Hanoi, Vietnam
End: Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam
Ticket Price: Fare for an upper-bunk spot in a four-bed cabin costs about $90, depending on time of year.

The route runs along the South China Sea, passing jungles, forests, beaches and islands. Between city stops, passengers will also view vistas populated by rice paddies and water buffalo.

Snacks, drinks and some meals are available for purchase on the train, but this isn’t a luxury line. Instead, consider disembarking at stops to explore attractions and sample the cuisine before re-boarding on another day.

Located in the middle of a picturesque landscape, a stay at the V Resorts Mridur can be a perfect one for any nature-loving traveller. Stay in a boho-inspired luxury tent, and go on nature treks, play a game of carrom, or just relax at the infinity pool while enjoying a cocktail.

9. Amer: Enjoy a bit of that old-world charm

A visit to Rajasthan is incomplete without visiting the Amer Fort. Built by the Rajputs during the 11th century, Amer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from the forts of Amer, the temples are something that should be on your bucket list, along with the Sheesh Mahal. With its incredible architecture, it is a true stunner.

Amer’s iconic history is mirrored beautifully by the understated details of the V Resorts Adbhut. The simple-yet-classy-rooms of this resort welcomes heritage travellers with open arms, and boast of being home to the stunning views of the Amer Fort and the numerous temples. The resort is also home to a friendly in-house labrador called Sophie, for a dose of light-hearted entertainment on the lawns.

Once you are done visiting the Amer Fort, the Anokhi Museum and the several step wells located behind the resort, head back to the restaurant and experience a romantic candlelight dinner under the open skies tailormade by the resort staff and sample the delectable Rajasthani cuisine prepared by the chef.

10. Kotagiri: Enjoy a quintessential coming together of luxury and lush greenery

A quick pit stop at Ooty will give you enough time to explore the Ooty Lake, Thread Garden, St. Stephen’s church and Doddabetta, where you can treat your eyes with spectacular views.

When you are done exploring for the day, head to the V Resorts Kotagiri to ease up on a hammock and relish a cup of tea while reading your favourite book. The resort is essentially a beautiful 4-room villa, which is tucked away in the midst of lush green tea plantations. The rooms are tastefully designed with soothing colours, and the views are breathtaking in all directions. Go on a photography tour or a trek, and do not miss out on a visit to the tea plantations.
