PAHALGAM - The Valley of Shepherds.
Situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river, Pahalgam (2,130 m) was once a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views. Now it is Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 25 deg C. Around Pahalgam are many places of interest, and the most beautiful of these is the huge, undulating meadow of Baisaran, surrounded by thickly wooded forests of pine. “Betaab Valley”, on the way to Chandanwari, is an idyllic spot for a picnic. Filmgoers will recognize it instantly as it has been the location of several movie scenes. Aru, 12 kms from Pahalgam, is a picturesque meadow and base point for trekking to Kolhai glacier, Katar Nag, Lidder Watt and Trasar & Marsar Lakes.

Pahalgam is also associated with the annual Amarnath Yatra. Chandanwari (2,895 m), 16 kms from Pahalgam, is the starting point of the yatra that takes place every year.


  •  Betaab Valley
Betab valley has earned its name from the popular Bollywood film ’Betab’ which was the debut film for the actress Amrita Singh and actor Sunny Deol. Betab valley is located fifteen km from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district. Betab valley falls on the way to the popular cave temple Amarnath between Chandanwari and Pahalgam. The picturesque location of Betab valley contains numerous lakes, green grazing lands, snow covered mountains and thick vegetation.

  •  Aru Valley
Aru is a tourist spot in the Anantnag District of Jammu & Kashmir, India. It is located around 12 from Pahalgam, 11 km upstream from the Lidder River. Noted for its scenic meadows, lakes and mountains, it is a base camp for trekking to the Kolhoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake. The village lies of the left bank of the Aru river, which is a tributary of the Lidder river.

  • Chandanwari
Chandanwari 16 km from Pahalgam, is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra that takes place every year in the month of Sawan. From Chandanwari onwards the track becomes much steeper, and is accessible on foot or by pony. About 11 km from Chandanwari is the mountain lake of Sheshnag (3,574 m), after which, 13 km away is the last stop, Panchtarni. The Amarnath cave is 6 km from there.

  •  Tulian Lake
Tulian Lake at Pahalgam in Anantnag District of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It lies at an altitude of 11,001 ft above sea level. The lake often has chunks of ice floating in it. It is surrounded on three sides by mountains that rise 300 metres above it and that are usually covered with snow. It is located in a meadow dotted with pine forests.

  •  Mt Kolahoi
Highest Mountain Peak in Kashmir Valley. It is also called Matterhorn of Kashmir because it resembles with Mt.Matterhorn of Switzerland. Kolahoi Peak is a mountain with a peak elevation of 17,799 ft (5,425 metres), in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, in the vicinity of Sonamarg. Kolahoi Peak rises from the Kolahoi Glacier is a pyramid-shaped peak with ice falls and ice fields at its bottom. The rock formation of the peak is extraordinary stable with aretes and ridges.
