New 24-7 toll-free number aimed at helping tourists in distress.
India’s Ministry of Tourism has launched a new helpline for international tourists.
Unveiled this week by Dr Mahesh Sharma, the
country’s Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, the new
“Toll Free Tourist Infoline” is available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, in 12 languages: English, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
The helpline will be managed by Tata Business Support Services using its network of call centres.
Addressing the launch ceremony, Dr Sharma said
the hotline marked “the fulfilment of the promise made to the people”,
with regards to the prioritisation of the safety and security of
tourists. The call centres will be able to assist travellers who
encounter problems while travelling in India.
The minister also announced that a new mobile
app to help tourists is also being planned, and that the Incredible
India website will be revamped to make it “more tourist-friendly”.
India’s tourism industry has been impacted in
recent years by incidents involving the safety of travellers, notably
women, in the country.
